
Child Protection Policy and Procedure
1. Purpose:
Our organization is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children participating in our programs. This Child Protection Policy and Procedure outlines our commitment to safeguarding children from harm, abuse, and exploitation.
2. Scope:
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, interns, and contractors working with children in any capacity within our organization. It covers both in-person and virtual interactions.
3. Legal Requirements:
Our organization complies with all legal requirements and regulations regarding child protection in the state of Connecticut. This includes but is not limited to:
Mandated reporting laws: All staff and volunteers are required to report any suspicion or evidence of child abuse or neglect to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) as mandated reporters.
Background checks: All staff and volunteers undergo thorough background checks, including criminal history and sex offender registry checks, in accordance with state law.
4. Child Protection Principles:
Zero-tolerance for abuse: Our organization has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of child abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual, or neglectful behavior.
Child-centered approach: We prioritize the safety, well-being, and best interests of the children we serve in all aspects of our programs and activities.
Confidentiality: Information regarding child protection concerns is handled with the utmost confidentiality, shared only with designated individuals on a need-to-know basis.
5. Prevention Measures:
Screening and training: All staff and volunteers undergo comprehensive screening, including interviews, reference checks, and training on child protection policies and procedures.
Code of conduct: We maintain a strict code of conduct that outlines acceptable behavior and interactions with children, emphasizing professionalism, respect, and appropriate boundaries.
Supervision: Children are supervised at all times during program activities to prevent and detect any signs of abuse or misconduct.
6. Reporting and Response Protocol:
Reporting suspicions: Any staff member, volunteer, or participant who suspects or becomes aware of any form of child abuse or neglect must immediately report it to the designated Site Supervisor or another designated Child Protection Officer.
Reporting procedure: Reports should be made verbally and documented in writing using our Incident Report Form. The designated Child Protection Officer will then follow the appropriate reporting procedures outlined by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).
Support and follow-up: The organization will provide support to the child and their family, as well as the individual who made the report. We will cooperate fully with any investigations conducted by DCF or law enforcement agencies.
7. Training and Education:
Mandatory training: All staff and volunteers are required to complete the CT DCF Mandated Reporter Training on the CT.gov website before working with children.
Ongoing education: Regular training sessions and updates on child protection policies and procedures are provided to all staff and volunteers to ensure compliance and awareness.
8. Review and Monitoring:
Regular review: This Child Protection Policy and Procedure will be reviewed annually by the organization's leadership team to ensure it remains current and effective.
Continuous improvement: Feedback from staff, volunteers, and stakeholders will be sought and considered for ongoing improvement of our child protection practices.
9. Compliance:
Non-compliance: Any staff member or volunteer found to have violated this policy or failed to fulfill their obligations under it will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of their involvement with the organization.
